HESI A2 Sections and Requirements: Build Your Own Exam Checklist
There is no useful one-size-fits-all HESI checklist. Start with your assigned sections and turn the instructions into a practical plan.
Independent, AI-assisted educational content · Our editorial approachThe short answer
Your nursing program’s HESI A2 instructions determine the sections you need and the testing arrangements it accepts. Check the current program packet for component names, time allowance, registration steps, identification, score delivery, and deadlines. Do not assume an online list of subjects or a single advertised test duration applies to your appointment.
A long list of possible HESI subjects can make it feel as though you must relearn every class you have ever taken. Before declaring your kitchen table a permanent study campsite, separate possible exam content from the assessments your program actually requires.
Your goal is not to create the longest checklist. It is to create a correct one that you can use. A clear list gives you permission to focus and a way to notice progress, even when your study window is shorter than you hoped.
Confirm the exact components assigned to you
Gateway Community and Technical College lists reading comprehension, vocabulary and general knowledge, math, biology, and anatomy and physiology in its HESI A2 content guidance. Other programs may assign different combinations or additional assessments. Treat the named school’s list as its own instructions, not a national syllabus.
Copy the component names directly from your program’s current materials into your planning sheet. If the testing page and admissions packet disagree, contact the program before choosing an exam package. Include your pathway and entry term so the person answering knows which requirements you mean.
- Required academic components and any additional assessments.
- Whether all components must be completed in one sitting.
- Which registration option, department instructions, or testing route to use.
- Whether results from another testing location are acceptable.
Separate test content from appointment logistics
Your content checklist tells you what to learn. Your appointment checklist tells you how to arrive ready to test. Keep them side by side, but do not merge them into a vague task called prepare for HESI. A completed science review does not confirm that you selected the correct registration route.
Create a logistics row for the appointment address or remote instructions, arrival time, identity documents, account access, permitted materials, and assistance contact. Use the instructions for your actual appointment. Check access to your account ahead of time without sharing your password or writing it on a public planning sheet.
If you need testing accommodations, contact the office specified by the school before you book. Ask how approval affects scheduling. Your preparation should include the arrangements that allow you to demonstrate your knowledge, not an assumption that everything can be adjusted at check-in.
Verify the time allowance before practicing the clock
An exact HESI duration copied from a general article can be misleading. Schools publish their own arrangements: Heritage University describes a 5.5-hour allowance for its specified assessment. That number does not establish the length of every HESI A2 appointment. Confirm the allowance and break instructions for yours.
Then rehearse in stages. First, work accurately without racing. Next, use short timed practice sets. Finally, practice a longer session using legitimate materials and the timing instructions relevant to you. Include the reading and calculation work, rather than measuring only how quickly you can click an answer.
A planning estimate is not an official timer. If you divide your available practice time across subjects, label that division as your own rehearsal plan. Ask the test administrator how the real session handles sections and breaks instead of treating your study calendar as a rulebook.
Turn each required section into a small first task
Suppose your confirmed list includes reading, math, and anatomy and physiology. This is a planning example, not a standard package. For reading, try a short passage and explain the main idea. For math, solve a fraction and proportion problem with the work shown. For anatomy, label a familiar structure and describe its function.
Record what happens without making it a judgment about your future. Perhaps you can explain a proportion but reverse the numbers when setting it up. Your next task becomes writing the units before calculating. That is much more useful than the note bad at math.
Repeat this process for every required component. Use the results to choose two priorities for the week while keeping a brief review of stronger subjects. You are gathering information to direct effort, not trying to manufacture a perfect first attempt.
Close the loop on score delivery
Before test day, identify what the program needs after the exam: an official report, a portal upload, a transcript transfer, or another specified step. Record who receives it and by what deadline. Ask whether results must be received or merely requested by that date.
Afterward, save your permitted score report and follow the submission instructions. Check that each required item is marked complete. If something is missing, contact the right office with your application details and confirmation information, not screenshots of confidential test questions.
A good checklist ends with verified completion. It should help you say, I know what is required and what remains, rather than hoping that a test appointment automatically finished every part of the application.
Common questions
Must every HESI A2 candidate take the same science sections?
Do not assume that. Use your program’s component list and ask admissions to clarify anything missing or inconsistent. A review book’s table of contents is not your registration instruction.
Are TEAS lessons enough for HESI A2?
They can help with overlapping academic foundations, but they are not a complete match for your HESI assessment. Use HESI-specific guidance and appropriate practice for your assigned components.
